I would say not to use lens flare and the filter->render->lighting effects, especially with drawings. While starting off with using Photoshop it might seem awesome, after you look around you'll realize that everyone uses it and that it's not as great as you usually thought. =P You'll find your art actually looks much better without it.

However I've always admired people that use MS paint to do artwork (and actually do a decent job at it). I can't draw for crap using photoshop, I can imagine how hard or more difficult it must be on paint.

I'll let Blue and the others give you tips for anatomy. =P

Not a bad start at all, keep practicing and you will definitely improve. If you look around others here have done the same.

I think you should work on your proportions and try to stay away from such a stereotypical anime style (unless, of course, that's what you're going for, like what Blue said.)

Insect battle? No idea of what that is but it reminded me of the stereotypical DBZ style.

A tip: Even if you intend to do manga, start out with realistic art. It's easiest to learn first the actual proportions and workings of the body and THEN caricature it. Besides, it'll keep you from copying another artist's style, and you may find that you prefer more realistic pictures better.

Trust me on this; it was big problem for me. Going into high school, I absolutely refused to even attempt to draw anything not manga. The problem was, all my art looked like Furuba or Inuyasha or was pulled from a how-to-draw book, and it all looked very poorly done (disproportionate, badly colored, often creepy, and more or less identical in actual facial features). My art teacher at school forced me to work from life, had me copy some masterworks, and wouldn't let me draw manga except on one specific cartoon assignment. After 3 years of drawing her way, my art has definitely improved, and while I still draw on my manga roots a bit and can draw straight-up manga if I want, I'm not bound to it.

So yeah. Do a little work from life. Start with photos if you need to, though drawing from life is preferable. Look up "the canon for the human head" and check out some diagrams of human muscleature. Feel your own face; twitch your nose, wiggle your eyebrows, figure out how your face works. Your art will start improving very quickly.

i agree with qing i had same problem with the faces all looking alike and stuff its hard to start with manga. it also makes it a lil harder to show expressions and emotions on the face if u dont try anything more realistic
